India’s then British Viceroy Lord Irwin formally inaugurated New Delhi as the capital of the country on February 13, 1931. Delhi has a geographical area of about 1,484 square kilometers, making it the largest city in India. It has a population of about 16.3 million. Before this, Calcutta was the capital city of the country.
