English naturalist Charles Darwin, who is associated with the term 'survival of the fittest', did not actually coin the term. He used the phrase in reference to natural selection in the fifth edition of 'On the Origin of Species' (1859). The phrase was however adopted from philosopher Herbert Spencer who used it in his writings, after reading Darwin's previous works.
