Chile scraps $2.5-billion mining project to protect penguins

Chile has rejected plans for a $2.5-billion iron-mining project in the Coquimbo region, home to 80% of world's Humboldt penguins. A local firm wanted to extract the metal near the penguin reserve and build a port to ship it out. The Environment Minister said, "I firmly believe in development, but it cannot be at the cost of our environmental heritage".
