Gambia announces suspension of death penalty

During a speech marking the country's 53rd independence anniversary, Gambian President Adama Barrow announced the suspension of death penalty in the country "as a first step towards its abolition". Death penalty in Gambia was last used under the authoritarian rule of Yahya Jammeh in 2012 when nine prisoners were executed by a firing squad.
