The Lok Sabha was informed on Wednesday that the population of the Ganga river dolphins has declined considerably and they are on the verge of extinction. Earlier, the Rajya Sabha was informed that out of the 96,000 animal species in India, over 50 species were assessed as "critically endangered". Notably, River Dolphin is the National Aquatic Animal of India.
