How do hurricanes get their names?

The World Meteorological Organization maintains a list of names for hurricanes that rotates every six years. The list of alphabetical names is decided in advance, and the system originated over 60 years ago. Hurricanes were earlier named by the order of occurrence, but this could become confusing if two storms occurred at the same time.
