People in Mauritius used floating booms made of human hair, sugar cane leaves, plastic bottles and straw in a bid to soak up the oil spill, with several volunteers in the island nation cutting off their hair to help prevent the spread of oil. The spill began after a Japanese ship started leaking oil off the south-east coast of Mauritius.
