Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best announced that she would retire next month after the city council reduced the police department's $409 million annual budget by $3.5 million following months of public protests. The protesters had demanded a 50% cut to the department's annual budget following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis in police custody on May 25.
