Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has thanked his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin for "saving his country" and for Russia's support in Syria's civil war. In response, Putin congratulated Assad on the results of the fight against terrorism and said that it is nearing its end. Russia began its military operations in Syria in 2015, backing the government against anti-Assad rebels.
