Vietnam has reportedly stopped oil drilling in a disputed area of the South China Sea after China threatened to attack Vietnamese bases in the Spratly Islands if the drilling did not stop. China claims indisputable sovereignty over the islands which it calls the Nansha Islands. Notably, several countries including the Philippines, Vietnam and others dispute China's claim over the region.
