Fungi used in eco-friendly battery recycling
short by Rini Kapoor / on Tuesday, 23 August, 2016
Naturally-occurring fungi are being used by researchers to develop an environment-friendly recycling process for extracting cobalt and lithium from waste batteries. The process involves using the organic acids generated by fungi to leach out metals from the batteries. Reportedly, 85% and 48% of lithium and cobalt respectively were extracted from cathodes of spent batteries using fungi.
