In a first, US-based researchers have grown a living bone in the lab. It was tested on pigs with bone damage and found to be better at regrowing bones than other methods. In the new process, unlike other techniques where a scaffold is implanted to support the growth, the bone was first grown outside in the scaffold before implanting.
