The then Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu had sanctioned ₹12 crore in February 2016 for the widening of the foot overbridge at Mumbai's Elphinstone station, where 23 people lost their lives in a stampede. Despite the sanction, the transporter had failed to award the tender for the widening. The stampede occurred due to overcrowding on the bridge, railway officials said.
