A tsunami has struck New Zealand's coast after a powerful earthquake hit the South Island just after midnight. Adding that more tsunami waves could hit the island, New Zealand civil defence personnel issued tsunami warnings for the entire east coast urging people to move to higher ground. The earthquake originated at a 5-kilometre depth, around 84 kilometres from Christchurch city.
