According to a theory, when buttons were introduced, men usually dressed themselves while women were often dressed by maidservants. With majority of the people being right-handed, the button's placement ensured ease for the servants to button other's clothing right-over-left. Additionally, it is also believed that the placement of the buttons on a women's shirt make breast feeding easier.
