Why do giraffes have long necks?

Giraffes are among the tallest mammals, capable of reaching a height of 19 feet. Some scientists believe that giraffes evolved to have long necks to be able to reach leaves on high trees. Others suggest that the long neck helps them to fight. Male giraffes are known to use their necks as weapons, in a ritual referred to as 'necking'.
