According to a theory, an intermission was introduced in movies, when films were screened using film reels and the projectionist needed time to change the reel. However, unlike most movies in the West, movies in India still have an intermission. Some filmmakers believe intervals are necessary for dramatic structure of Bollywood movies, which seeks to keep the audience engrossed.
