A new variant of SARS-CoV-2 nicknamed FLiRT has begun to spread wide across the United States, according to news reports. Experts say these are distantly related to Omicron spun out from JN.1 - behind the surge in cases this past winter. FLiRT is based on the technical names for the mutations of the virus.
